SMS celebrates major win with leading oilfield services client in Angola

18 November 2021

SMS is celebrating a major new project with a leading global oilfield services client in Angola to provide two replacement HPUs (Hydraulic Power Units) to a field that supports oil and gas extraction.

The win reflects Great Yarmouth based SMS’s work in providing world-class hydraulic and electrical engineering solutions for the global energy sector.

The project is located within the deep water block 14 region of Angola – the lower Congo basin.  Block 14 lies in 390m (1,280ft) of water covering 1,560 square miles and the development centres are the first Compliant Piled Tower (CPT) outside the Gulf of Mexico.

The CPT measures approximately 512m (1,680ft) from the seafloor to the top of its derrick.  This ranks it as the fifth tallest freestanding structure in the world, standing 212m (694ft).  It is taller than the Eiffel Tower, reflecting the grand scale of the project.

The project win was instigated by Diane Johnson, Certification Technician, at SMS who said:

“This major project win reflects SMS’ commitment to excellence in delivering best-in-class engineering solutions to clients with operations in some of the most difficult environments.  We’re really proud of this win – it’s great validation of what we do.”

Colin Elcoate, CEO of the Alderley Group said:

“We’re really excited by this project win that shows a major global business backing SMS.  We took an existing design and made new units for our client, which indicates the level of trust that they placed in us from day one.”

Please join us in congratulating Diane as well as the wider SMS team on this fantastic news.
